Pearland Historical Society gets back on track after pandemic, welcoming artifacts and family history stories

The Pearland Historical Society was among many area organizations that were drastically affected by the pandemic, and the group put many of its regular meetings and events on hold.
But the group recently got back to the business of celebrating and preserving Pearland history, resuming its annual reunion luncheon after a two-year hiatus and putting out a call for residents to contribute family stories and artifacts to the group.
“The annual reunion luncheon is a big deal for us,” Brenda Martin Riggs, the group’s first vice president, said of the Oct. 29 event at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 2320 Hatfield Road. “It’s a time for members and friends to come together to honor the graduating classes of Pearland High School.”
Because the yearly event didn’t happen in 2020 and 2021, Riggs, along with society president Jerry Johnston, decided to celebrate the graduating classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 at the 2022 installment.
Johnston said the program also included a candle-lighting ceremony for society members who’ve died in the past three years.
The society, which counts approximately 200 paying members, began its post-pandemic chapter with a special meeting in late August.
