Midland man arrested in 1996 rape; investigators used genealogy

With the help of a genealogy profile, a 58-year-old Midland man was jailed Tuesday on a $500,000 cash/surety bond in connection with a July 1996 rape.
Douglas Weber is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and arraigned Wednesday in Midland County District Court. He is set for a probable cause hearing on Nov. 15.
Midland County Prosecutor J. Dee Brooks said that on Jan. 7, 1996, an 18-year-old woman was driving home when her car broke down in Midland County. A man, who the woman did not know, stopped and offered to give her a ride home. Instead, he drove her to a rural area and attacked her. Brooks said the woman tried to get away, but the man forced her down and raped her.
After the assault, he was driving away with her when he saw lights, which he thought was police. He let her out of the car and the woman made it home and told her mother what had happened. They went to a hospital and evidence of the assault was collected, Brooks said. Police were also called. The suspect could not be found at that time.
Weber is also being held without bond in the Midland County Jail on three misdemeanor cases involving assault and battery, trespassing and larceny under $200. The offenses allegedly occurred in July and August 2021. However, Weber didn’t show for the hearings.
