CARLINVILLE – Laura Adair is the first to admit that her work can be thankless. But she clearly sees the value in it
“It’s a challenge, for sure,” said Adair, who spends her days searching for, and scanning, historical records. “It takes a lot of time, and you always run into new problems that you have to figure out. But I really do love it.”
Adair is part of FamilySearch, a wide-ranging network which has established itself as an international leader in digital preservation and access to historical documents. Sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, FamilySearch is a non-commercial, non-government organization that has connected with over 10,000 archives, churches, and record centers in over 150 countries.
For much of the fall, she has been working at the Carlinville Public Library. “I’ve had a great time in Illinois,” said Adair. “It’s pretty wonderful here, a beautiful area with a lot of history.”
The roots of FamilySearch date to 1894. Today, it is the largest genealogical organization on the globe, and is highly respected by researchers and history enthusiasts for its depth and scope.
The efforts of FamilySearch workers and volunteers have allowed free access to users worldwide, as records are available on the Family Search website and related links. The documents span a wide array of local and regional history,…
