Albert “Al” Elwood Werking, 93, passed away August 24, 2022 at Homewood Health Care Center in Williamsport, Maryland.
Al was born in Hagerstown, Maryland on February 11, 1929, the son of the late Albert Newton and Frances (Lantz) Werking. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Ida (Sellent) Werking and special friend Harriet Campbell, as well as his parents, sister Wanda Dolores (Werking) Fuss and brother Charles Leroy Werking. He is survived by nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Al spent the first 11 years of his life in Leitersburg, Maryland – his village birthplace – where he attended grade school. In 1941, his family moved to the current location of Lovell’s Nursery on the Leitersburg Pike. Al attended Woodland Way Junior High and Hagerstown High, graduating in 1946. Following high school, Al attended the University of Maryland, graduating in 1950, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry.
Following a year serving as manager of the family beef farm (Antietam View Farms) near Leitersburg, Al joined the Navy where he served as an Electronics Technician. While attending electronics school at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Al married Dorothy Ida Sellent of Almena, Wisconsin.
After Al’s discharge from the Navy, in recognition of his experience as a Boy Scout and volunteer leader, he was offered the position of District Scout Executive for the local Mason-Dixon Boy Scout Council. While a Scout in Troop 2 at St. Paul’s United…
